Industrial Railways Company was founded in 1956 to provide railroad track construction, maintenance and inspection services for rail-served industrial consumers, shippers, ports, manufacturers and similar industries.  We construct railway freight projects across a wide variety of commodities and sectors for companies big and small.

This job description is not intended to represent a complete, comprehensive list of all duties and responsibilities that may be required in this position. The successful candidate should expect unplanned activities and other duties as assigned. The general responsibilities and quantifications are as follows:

 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

1.       Lift rails using the manual track jack;

2.       Sweep, pick, and dig dust from movable track parts;

3.       Remove and replace ballast, dig holes and trenches;

4.       Unload or assist in unloading of materials from rail car, cart or truck;

5.       Observe condition of tracks, track beds, and track right of way for problems or defects.

6.       Perform track maintenance, repair, and installation;

7.       Remove and install ties with tie tongs;

8.       Work safely around equipment;

9.       Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures;

10.   Cut vegetation and brush when needed;

11.   Pull spikes with clay bar, plug spike holes and drive spikes into ties with a spike maul;

12.   Install and remove rail anchors;

13.   Handle, place, and align tie plates under rails.

 

General/Other Responsibilities and Duties:

1.       A positive attitude with a strong desire to collaborate, learn and to teach others;

2.       Good organization skills with good note taking and task tracking capabilities;

3.       A desire to take ownership of various tasks and engage in collaborative discussion on ways to continually improve our final design product;

4.       Ability to work in a tight-knit collaborative environment with the eagerness to engage others.

 

Job Qualifications:

 

Required -

1.       Applicants must be 18 years of age or older;

2.       Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation;

3.       Ability to perform heavy physical labor;

4.       Must be capable of performing physically strenuous work on a continuous basis;

5.       Must be able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills;

6.       Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations;

7.       Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner in order to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s). Bilingual workers are highly desired;

8.       Authorized to work in the United States.

 

Preferred -

1.       Experience with working in refineries and other plants;

2.       Bilingual (Spanish and English);

3.       Welding experience;

4.       Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL);

5.       Experience operating construction or farm equipment;

6.       1 year(s) Railroad Maintenance of Way work experience.

 

Physical Requirements:

1.       Walks and stands for extended periods on areas with uneven footing and surface;

2.       Balance sufficient to walk on ballast;

3.       Stoops, bends, kneels, crouches, balances occasionally for more a majority of the work day with periodic breaks;

4.       Flexibility sufficient for track maintenance tasks such as flexing to pick up tie plates;

5.       Good eye-hand coordination;

6.       Work schedule may involve overtime including weekends and holidays;

7.       Heavy physical labor, lift/carry and push/pull equipment and other objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), 50 lbs. (occasionally), and 75 lbs. (infrequently);

8.       Works outside in all types of weather conditions;

9.       Works at construction sites;

10.   Uses repetitive motions;

11.   Uses close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception;

12.   Exposed to moving mechanical parts;

13.   Exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and cold weather;

14.   Exposed to loud noise.

This position will be primarily responsible for work occurring throughout the state of California and Nevada; however travel to other areas with periods away from home should be expected. Must be willing to travel away from home during the work week. Work weeks are typically 40 + hours per week Monday through Friday. Will be subject to on-call, overtime, weekends and holidays as required.
